02 Scrum on the Beach – Trafalgar Square

Stooly.com attended the 02 Scrum on the Beach event in Trafalgar Square on the 28th of August 2008. The event started at 11:00, we only pitched up at 11:30 due to traffic but when we got there, they’re already had the event in full swing. As it only started by the time we got there, the crowds were still starting to grow but they did have a healthy turn out by 13:00!

There were no seating available and majority of people were sitting on the steps in front of the National Museum. Some were even sitting on the edges of the two fountains to get a better view of the people playing rugby on the artificial beach. We expected a bit more in terms of the wow factor but they did not too badly, had plenty of advertisement gear for 02 and a huge screen with a presenter doing his thing.

As you can see from the photos, they had two 02 Angels on lifeguard chairs which was a nice touch to the whole beach theme. It was a pity that we did not have a sunny day in London but at least it wasn’t cold or raining. 02 customers could get exclusive access to a VIP area where you could get a free smoothie and take a ride on a giant mechanical rugby ball, something similar to those mechanical bulls you sit on to see who stays on the longest. 02 customers could also scribble down their details to be in the running to win a fully kitted out campervan which was parked by the VIP area.

The 02 Scrum on the Beach event even had a Mr & Mrs competition later on during the day which Paul Sackey and James Haskell co-presented with the presenter. We’ve got an entire video of them all doing the competition for all to see below. All in all, it was a good day out in London. The promotion was initially to get more people playing rugby or at least start doing some sort of sport and I think they’ve lured in a few more players after today.

We have plenty of photos of the 02 Scrum on the Beach event but I am sure you’ll be able to find a few more on sites such as Flickr and Photobucket as we saw plenty of people taking snaps. There were plenty of video cameras around, still curious if they were going to show the videos on tv some time.
