Street Fundraiser Smucks

Friday, March 28th, 2008 | General with No Comments »

It has been a hectic few days at work and something has sparked me to blurt out about street fundraisers in London and how they work on my nerves. I have nothing against these charity street fundraisers you will find in and around central London but they’ve now driven me to a point where I want to avoid them with vengeance.

A lot of companies have these funny rules about five minute smoke breaks or forty five minute lunch breaks, that is why we treasure every minute we do not have to be working where we are free to stroll around, grab lunch or talk with colleagues, not to be plagued by a different street fundraiser. I currently work very close to Waterloo Station in Central London, which means if I ever should go for lunch I would run the risk of bumping into a street fundraiser as they pick areas where there would be a lot of people. Some of these street fundraisers are so pushy, yet they do not understand that you’re not in the position to help them with a regular donation via a direct debit or that you only have a set amount of time to do your personal things before you have to go back to the office.

A few weeks ago I was waiting for my bus close to the station and this guy with a clipboard approached me. I smiled at him and politely said that I am not interested. Not that I do not support the needy but I prefer to help animals as fewer people tend to help them. Anyway he got all annoyed with me and said it would only take a minute. I then looked at the form he wanted to complete and noticed that they wanted a lot of personal details that I was not willing to dish out left right and centre due to me being a previous victim of identity fraud. Said to him that I preferred not to complete the form because of this, got a smuck answer back from him saying that he could get those details from the electoral roll anyway and walked away. I was so disgusted with him; he put me off being nice to anyone else asking me for charity with a clipboard! *arghhh*

Easter Weekend Snow

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008 | London Living with No Comments »

There is no greater feeling that waking up and looking out the window to see it snowing. That has been a rare occurrence this winter as London barely had any snow, none that I can remember seeing at all this year. The winters in London are getting warmer and warmer and the snow I’ve seen this morning, had been very late. Apparently this is the first that that Easter is so early in the year for a couple of years and won’t be this early again for a few more years to come.

I got up quickly and grabbed the digital camera and tried to take a photo for you folks to see, just a pity that the snow melts by the time it gets to the ground. Well, decided to take a short clip and uploaded that to YouTube for everyone to watch. Not very exciting but gives you an idea of snow in London.

BBC iPlayer

Nothing beats a good few days off work to sit around and do nothing. We wanted to go away for the Easter weekend but that would have cost a small fortune as airlines and travel companies push up the prices as holidays are in demand. A small tip for anyone not living in the United Kingdom yet, do not travel on or just before a bank holiday (in other words, public holiday) as airports and roads are always busy and it would be a living nightmare to get anywhere.

Well to get back to my point, been enjoying the last two days at home, relaxing and doing whatever I please when I came across a nifty website from the BBC and their latest online gadget called BBC iPlayer. It is where you can watch shows on the internet through this player that was recently on television. You currently do not need a TV license to be able to watch some of the shows, which is brilliant. You get to watch the shows you want to watch when you want to watch it. So I enjoyed the afternoon with a bit of Torchwood and Top Gear. I am not sure if anyone else in the world is able to watch the shows but it is worth a try. I do have to warn you, it’ll eat your bandwidth, so watch out if you are on a monthly bandwidth cap.

Hopefully the weather will be brilliant tomorrow in London so I can head down to the park around the corner and fly the kite for an hour or so. Enjoy the rest of your Easter Weekend!
