This city we live in is a great city to be in, live and experience but you will be shocked to see that London like any other city has a dark and sad side which a lot of people choose to ignore. It is about time we mention some of those darker truths in the hope that anyone out there read about them and try to make a difference somewhere.

We are specifically talking about the following three subjects you will be forced to face at one stage or another by living in London. Those are homeless people sleeping on benches or in front of central London stores with their card box and their shabby sleeping bag or old people struggling to travel on public transport to get some groceries done or the horrible news about animals being abused or being left to die on the streets. All these topics should touch us as human beings and if you can lend a hand to make a difference then you definitely should.

It personally breaks my heart to see someone beg in the street when you can clearly see that they have been sleeping rough for most of their lives but it also angers me when some people take the easy way out and beg because it is easier. There is a magazine available to buy from licensed homeless people called Big Issue. Last time I checked they sell each issue for around £1.50 and everyone selling the Big Issue should have a photo id badge with them to prove that they are genuinely homeless and doing it as part of the Big Issue’s scheme to help homeless people bring in extra money. You will sometimes see people sitting in front of shopping markets with their pet begging for money, a lot of people walk past them and I dread walking past there as my conscience will eat me alive. Most of the time I tend to buy something they can eat in the store rather than to give them money as we all know that money makes you do evil things.

You can make a difference by giving them food and water, steer clear of money as it normally feeds their addiction and to be honest, you will be adding to problem instead of the solution. You can also lend a helping hand by volunteering at a homeless shelter to help feed people, educate them or just lend a listening ear.

The elderly that walk alone in the streets buy their own food after they have struggled the whole morning to get there and back and those who spend Christmas alone because nobody cares anymore are all over London. I read an article in the newspaper that a lot of elderly Londoners spend Christmas alone without a special meal because they have no relatives or friends looking out for them. It breaks my heart to think I may end up like that as well and would really be disappointed in humanity to think that we do not care about each other as well that is why I strongly urge you to volunteer for a day or two. Chat with them and help them for a day, it really makes a difference people. We will compile a list of volunteer organisations where you can browse through and pick something you are comfortable with.
