This page will be quite important and you may need to bookmark it in order not to lose it along the way. We will be discussing common landlord issues, tenancy terms and various forms of accommodation available in London. There are about 8 million people living in London and everyone needs a place to call their home.

London properties are not incredibly big, do not think they intended for London to become such a massive city back in the day when they started to connect all the different boroughs.

Most places offering accommodation will charge some sort of deposit, also known as a bond. Prices do vary; some charge a week’s accommodation while others demand 6 weeks accommodation. You would be pleased to know that a new law came into affect this year that protects the tenant more from cheating landlords and visa versa. The deposit / bond are kept by a third party until both parties are happy so to speak.

  1. Renting a house or flat is obviously the more expensive choice of accommodation out of them all. You are then solely responsible for the rent and bills that comes with it. The only advantage is that you have a lot more space to move around as you please.
  2. House Share / Room Share is the popular choice amongst all travellers or people that would like to make their home a temporary one. You share an entire house with up to eight people, depending on the size of the house. You may opt to get your own room but that is normally more expensive than a shared room. A lot of people make their friends in London through this arrangement as it brings people together but at the same time, someone can annoy you incredibly and make your life a living hell.
  3. Couch Surfing is becoming very popular as lot of people travelling through Europe prefer to stay over at friends and avoid the whole paying issue. You can rent someone’s couch for the night at very cheap prices but at least you will have a warm place to sleep and not pay hostel charges or hotel room prices. A lot of people are doing this and they seem to love it.

You can visit the Gumtree website as they have tonnes of new advertisements of people looking for accommodation or people offering accommodation. You will also notice that people in London tend to become very flexible, there are no set rules for finding a spot to stay in London.

London is divided into different boroughs which a lot of people find confusing. There is a massive motorway around London called the M25, which can be either a blessing or hell to be on at times. Everything within the M25 is London. To confuse you even more, there are a few boroughs in each county. Each borough is run by a Council and you are liable to pay council tax if you rent a property in London. Council Tax might already be included in the weekly / monthly rent, check with your landlord to make sure.
