It may come as no surprise that living in London can be quite expensive and it has become my sole mission to cut back as much as I can without enjoying life. We all work pretty hard or at least most of us and we deserve to enjoy London a bit more without always being in debt.

If you are single and do not mind sharing then I would recommend you move into a share house. There are hundreds of them in London and counting. You can cut down on bills like Council Tax, TV License & Subscription, Water, Electricity and Gas as they are all down to the landlord to pay. All you do is share a room with another person and live life as you would normally do.

Travelling does not have to cost you an arm or leg either. As you may have heard, London is divided in six zones. Zone one being the most expensive as it is Central London. To avoid paying a zone one fare, take the bus as they recently made it much cheaper to travel by bus. A single bus journey will cost £0.90 while a single journey on the London Underground costs £1.50. You do the math and see how much you can really save. Walk a bit more often, not everything in London is miles apart. Cycling is becoming highly popular in London and the mayor has dedicated more cycling routes to accommodate it.

Brand names are to be avoided most of the time. You can buy tonnes of wholesome foods at big supermarkets without spending too much of your monthly budget. A lot of products have a colour code scheme on it that tells you how healthy the product is for you and you will notice that a lot of no brand name products are quite good for you. You can buy great clothing items from Primark or George and there is nothing wrong with the quality.

Stay as far away as you can from buying lunch every day. That could end up costing you a small fortune. Try to pack in lunch than buying something every day. You work about 20-25 days a month, add that with an average of £3 and you will be kicking yourself. I know the temptation is always in your face but with a little bit of will power, you can win the battle.

Remember that London is quite big and there are a lot of free events all over to enjoy. Keep an eye out for local newspapers advertising those events on billboards. The internet is a good source of finding these free events. There is always something going on in London, you just have to keep an eye open for them.
