Swine Flu in London

4 May 2009 212 views 2 Comments

Half an hour ago I stumbled across the news feed on Yahoo that said a third school had been closed due to swine flu and this time it is in London. The whole swine flu business is starting to feel real to me, strange how we only start worrying when we look an issue straight in the eye.  There are around eight million people living in London, what is the chances of me catching it? Now that you think about it, quite high if I am in the wrong place or not taking better care of myself.

Here is an interesting fact that nobody seems to think about. The flu virus kills thousands of people each year and I seemed to treat it as minor when it actually could be fatal. That does not stop us from living our lives, now does it? If you are already living in London, then you are well aware of how quickly a cold or flu can spread especially when you use public transportation. You can avoid majority of the cold and flu spells during the year by taking better care of yourself.

Here are a few simple things to keep you healthy, most even recommended by the NHS (National Health Service).

  • Sneeze into a tissue and bin it immediately, aka catch it and kill it.
  • Wash your hands after using public transport with anti bacteria gel. This can be bought for a few pence per bottle that fits nicely in your bag or pocket.
  • Try to de-stress more often, too much stresses causes your immune system to get weak and you will be prone to catching a cold or flu.
  • Up your intake of vegetables and fruit, they are high in natural vitamins that keep you alive and kicking.

Sue, I can understand your concern about coming to London. I feel quite safe living in London knowing that the NHS is prepared for the virus and that they are dealing with so many cases each day that they have sufficient experience to deal with any further cases.

Why would you say that the tube is your only means of transport? Trains seems to be better and I tend to use busses. Best advise would be to buy a bottle of hand gel that you can clean your hands with when walking around London. It kills bacteria which would stop the spreading of any colds including swine flu.
