Volunteering Makes a Difference

24 May 2009 476 views No Comment

The idea of volunteering seems like a daunting one but I took a leap of faith a few weeks back and decided that I need to get myself out there and help where I can. Believe it or not but we need volunteers in the world to make things right again or to make a difference. There are so many charities in London that need help in one way or another and a few hours of your time will not only help a good cause but will save what little resources they have to expand their work.

In the beginning I got really annoyed with all the people trying to stop me on the pavements when walking past them. They would make you feel bad for not standing there and signing up with a Direct Debit to their charity. These types of people with clipboards in their hands tend to work for bigger charities and they tend to be students. I personally feel that giving money to a charity never gets to where it should go and is gargled up by admin costs to help run the charity.  I suppose it helps ease the guilt for others if they chuck money at it, they feel better about themselves.

Anyway, back to my original point. Give your time to a charity to help raise funds by using buckets and standing in a shopping centre or you could offer your time to help the cause ie. Cleaning of kennels if it is for an animal charity. There is more to give than just money and you can make a difference. Like I said, I took the leap and signed myself up to help the charity raise money outside a football match. It is both a scary and rewarding experience the first time but I guess it gets better with time. Now that I have done it for the first time, I am constantly looking for smaller charities that need help.

Would you consider volunteering?
